What is an Ontario Company Key?
A Company Key is a 9-digit access code issued by ServiceOntario for the Ontario Business Registry (OBR). It works like a PIN for your business: anyone filing on its behalf — an annual return, a change of address, articles of amendment — needs the key to access the record.
Most of our customers land here mid-task: a filing is due, the registry asked for a Company Key, and there isn't one on hand.
- Required since February 1, 2025A Company Key is now required for all Ontario Business Registry filings. Before that date, some filings could be made without one.
- Older businesses never received oneIf your corporation or business was registered before October 19, 2021 — when the OBR launched — no key was automatically issued. You have to request it.
- One key per registered entityCorporations, sole proprietorships, and partnerships each have a key for their registry record. The request process is the same.
How to get your Ontario Company Key

- ServiceOntario issues your keyWith an official email on file, the key is emailed directly to it — typically within minutes of our submission.
- No email on file? We retrieve itWe obtain your key directly through the registry and email it to you within 2 business days — at no extra cost.
When do you need a Company Key?
- Ontario Annual Return Due every year — the most common reason our customers need a key.
- Initial Return / Notice of Change Registered address, director, and officer updates.
- Articles of Amendment Including corporate name changes.
- Dissolutions and most other filings Nearly every transaction on an Ontario Business Registry record requires the key.
What you'll need ready
Have these on hand and the whole thing takes a few minutes:
- Your corporation or business name
- Your Ontario Corporation Number — if it's handy
- The official email on file — if you know it
How long does it take to get a Company Key?
Requests are verified and submitted within 2 business hours. When your corporation has a current official email on file, ServiceOntario emails the key directly to it, typically within minutes — order in the morning and your key can be in your inbox before lunch.
Without an official email on file, the government's own process mails the key to your registered address — which can take weeks, and goes nowhere if that address is out of date. That's the case our service is built for: we retrieve the key directly and email it to you within 2 business days, backed by our money-back Delivery Guarantee.

Ontario Company Key FAQ
What is a Company Key used for?+
It's the access code for your business's Ontario Business Registry record. You (or anyone filing for you) need it to submit annual returns, update your registered address or directors, file articles of amendment, dissolve the corporation, and make most other OBR filings.
How long does it take to get my Company Key?+
We verify and submit your request within 2 business hours. With a current official email on file, ServiceOntario emails the key directly to it — typically within minutes of submission. Otherwise, we retrieve it directly and email it to you within 2 business days.
How much does an Ontario Company Key cost?+
$99 + HST, all-in, government fees included. Standard requests carry no government charge, and where the registry applies a fee for direct retrieval, it's covered. No hidden fees.
How will I receive the key?+
By email — either from ServiceOntario to your corporation's official email on file, or from Opstart to the email address on your order if we retrieve it directly.
I don't know if my corporation has an official email on file. What do I do?+
Leave that field blank. Businesses registered before October 2021 usually don't have one. We'll route your request the right way automatically — same price either way.
What if the email I provide doesn't match the registry's records?+
We'll let you know and begin direct retrieval right away, at no extra cost. If you'd rather we first try a different email address, reply to that message and we'll attempt it once before proceeding.
What happens if my request is rejected?+
Mismatched or incomplete details are the usual cause. Our verification step catches most of them before submission, and if a request is still rejected, we correct and resubmit it at no extra charge.
What if I still don't receive my key?+
That's what our Money-Back Guarantee is for. If your key hasn't arrived — for any reason — we retrieve it directly and deliver it ourselves. And if we still can't get it to you within 2 business days of verifying your order, you receive a full refund. The guarantee assumes the business exists on the Ontario Business Registry and the details provided are accurate.
Is this the same as the federal Corporation Key?+
No. Corporations Canada issues a separate "corporation key" for federally incorporated companies. This page is for the Ontario Company Key used with the Ontario Business Registry. If your corporation is federal, you may need both — the Ontario key applies to your Ontario extra-provincial registration.
I lost my Company Key. Can you get me a new one?+
Yes — a replacement request works the same way as a first-time request. Order above and we'll take care of it.
Does this apply to sole proprietorships and partnerships?+
Yes. Registered sole proprietorships and partnerships in Ontario have Company Keys for their Business Identification Number (BIN) records too, and the request process is the same.
Can't I request a Company Key from the government myself?+
Yes — anyone can request a Company Key directly from ServiceOntario at no charge, and if your corporation has a current official email on file, that's a fine option. Our service is for everyone else: no email on file, an out-of-date registered address, uncertainty about what the registry has on record, or simply no time for ministry back-and-forth.
